NON-OIL EXPORT

1 big brief: Nigeria earns N14 billion from cashew export

Nigeria earned N14 billion from exporting raw cashew in the last year, the National Cashew Association of Nigeria (NCAN) has said.

Why it matters: The association stated that the earnings could be higher if the Federal Government and sub-national levels invested in the sector and increased support for the processing of cashew in Nigeria.

📊By the numbers: According to statistics, the production of cashew in Nigeria is about 350,000 metric tonnes of cashew per annum. However, with the collaborations from ministries, departments and agencies, for the seedlings distributed over the past years, the coming harvest is expected to be over 400,000 metric tonnes.

💬What they're saying: “We hope to grow to over a million metric tonnes in the next four or five years. Nigeria is presently doing more export of raw cashew nuts because we don’t process more of it. It is generally a problem in Africa, not only in Nigeria." Prince Ojo Ajanaku, National President, National Cashew Association of Nigeria (NCAN).

  • We are not processing, but we are exporting raw cashew nuts, which gives us a lot of income when we talk about foreign earnings. This is second to sesame seed when you talk about foreign earning generations. We got about N14 billion in export. We only had challenges in exporting during the time of Apapa gridlock.”

The bottom line: Managing Director of African Cashew Alliance, (ACA) Ernest Mintah, said that the 16th ACA Annual Cashew Conference coming up September in Nigeria will enable producers of cashew to sensitize the sector and attract more investment and create job opportunities for Nigerians.

TRADE ROUNDUP

TRADE | Nigeria’s Non-Oil Export as the country’s new means of sustenance

  • Nigeria’s non-oil exports are dominated by raw materials and agricultural commodities. In the fourth quarter of 2021, non-oil exports were dominated by urea, cocoa, sesame seeds, and aluminum alloys.

PORT | We’re working to bring relief to the Eastern ports — Bello-Koko, NPA boss

  • There has been a tremendous increase of Cargo Throughput into Onne, Rivers State. In terms of percentage increases, Onne has the highest increase in percentages compared to last year.
